Yoga Proven Effective in Complementary Cancer Care

By Jack Bleeker

The 21st Century has brought with it tremendous strides in cancer survival and the efficacy of therapies. Among the more important aspects of this progress is the implementation of integrative oncology as an effective model for cancer treatment. Integrative oncology emphasizes not only the use of traditional cancer treatments, such as surgery, chemotherapy, and surgery, but also complementary, non-curative therapies designed to ease the process of cancer treatment for the patient. These therapies can range from acupuncture to meditation, but have proven more often than not to be effective in assisting patients through the discomforts commonly associated with traditional cancer treatment. One therapy being incorporated into cancer care in recent years is Yoga. The primary goals of integrative oncology are to achieve effective cancer treatment while maintaining patient comfort and relief of stress. Just as Yoga has been used for hundreds of years as an effective stress release mechanism for many people, so too is it now being utilized by cancer patients.

While further research is ongoing, preliminary studies examining the effects of Yoga among cancer patients and survivors support the efficacy of Yoga within cancer treatment regimens, including the combating of symptoms caused by chemotherapy drugs. Yoga has shown to dramatically reduce sleeplessness, cancer-related distress, nausea, and excessive fatigue.

Some aggressive cancers are difficult to treat with curative therapies. Many patients of malignancies such as mesothelioma choose to incorporate alternative therapies such as Yoga, not to supplant traditional therapies, but to improve quality of life and reduce anxiety associated with terminal disease. Therapies which can reduce stress levels and alleviate symptoms associated with aggressive chemotherapy cocktails and radiation treatments can be extremely beneficial not only to patients but also to family members and loved ones of patients.

This is not to say however, that Yoga and other alternative therapies are appropriate for all patients. Patients of malignant mesothelioma, for instance, should speak with their oncologist and other doctors to ensure that they are in good enough health to pursue any therapy which could induce mild stress on the body. However, support for Yoga and other well-being-based therapies is growing among the oncology establishment and many cancer centers are introducing sessions designed for patients and family members. If the ultimate goals of complementary cancer care are to introduce therapies which improve comfort levels and reduce stress experienced by patients and loved ones, Yoga will be at the forefront of integrative oncology now and in the future.

Breast Cancer Zumba Fundraiser

Last Saturday, The Chakra House donated the studio space and Zumba Instructor Becky Pelnar donated her time for a Breast Cancer Fundraising Zumba class organized by Jenn Barry. For those of you that didn't know about the event or couldn't attend, there is still a way that you can participate. Below is Jenn Barry's story about her experience with cancer, the event she is raising funds and awareness for, and a link for you to get involved.

In the spring of 2006, my friend Lou Ann told me that, after visiting a doctor for back pain, she had breast cancer. It was stage 4 (bad) and had spread. I was devastated and wanted so badly to do something to help, but had no idea what to do. The very next day (funny how things happen!) I got a postcard announcing a 3-day, 60-mile walk to raise money to support breast-cancer research and early detection screening for people with low incomes. I was so relieved that there was something I could do and signed up right away!

The Susan G. Komen 3-day walk is quite an event. While walking is something most of us do every day, walking 60 miles is a whole different thing. The organization sent me a 16-week training plan and assigned me a dedicated online coach. There would be clinics and other events around the country and over the phone to help me prepare. I read that, on event day, we'd be given food, drink, bathrooms and entertainment every 3 miles. Chiropractic students and medical staff would be available at each stop and at the home-base where we would camp each night. All of this support and structure comes with a cost. As a result, we're required to raise $2,300 to participate in the event.

During my first 3-day walk, I did not follow the training plan closely and lost 3 toenails. It took 8 months for them to grow back. My feet were so swollen that I couldn't wear shoes for over 2 weeks! I didn't mind, though because my friend had just died from her cancer.

Shortly after this, another friend was diagnosed. Then my grandmother died from her cancer. Next, one of the kids at my preschool told me she was scared that her mommy would die because she had just been diagnosed with breast cancer. I signed up to walk again in 2007.

Now, it's 2009 and I now volunteer at Gilda's Club (for people with cancer and their family & friends) and Candlelighters (for children with cancer and their families). I've raised over $8,000 to support other people on this difficult and bizarre journey. For the first time, I'm having trouble meeting my minimum fundraising requirement. As a result, I've scheduled events to help raise money like the Zumba Fundraiser held in conjuction with The Chakra House. If you couldn't make it, I urge you to visit my website and consider making a donation to this important cause. Donations from people like you are what allow me to keep walking. I want to keep walking because everyone deserves a lifetime. I walk because I can and because losing a few toenails is a lot easier than battling cancer.

If you're interested in helping me continue walking, please check out my website:

Race For the Cure

The Race For the Cure took route along Lakeside Street today! The Chakra House set up a table with pink balloons for support. For today only, we are donating 15% of all boutique sales to Breast Cancer Research. So come on in and stock up on candles, essential oils, crystals, CDs, etc.
Support Table

We were right next to the volunteers who passed out water, and after the 3rd person that didn't get water in time I started passing it out too. Everyone was so grateful!

The coolest thing I noticed is that all (and I mean ALL) the kids that were participating we very concerned with the amount of 'liter' that was on the ground because of the race...all the cups of water that is. Well, don't worry kids! The volunteers (and my husband David) cleaned up the mess in no time!

Isthmus Green Day Event

Well, the Isthmus Green Day Event was a big success! We met a lot of fabulous new people and bumped into some old friends. Manisha, our Hatha and Private Yoga instructor, gave a lecture on Yoga 101 that was completely filled with attendees. We even raffled off a FREE 1-Week Unlimited Class Pass. (CONGRATS TO WENDY FOR WINNING!)

Now, the most interesting part of the event I think was the fact that I thought I was hiding my baby bump so well. I had NO idea that it was so obvious. So in case you're wondering - yes, I am pregnant. I didn't just eat a ton of those fabulous organic hamburgers they had at the event. (well I did, but that's not the point!) Check out my belly below:

A Basic Introduction To Chakras

You may have heard of chakras referred to spinning disks or wheels near your spine, but what the heck does that mean? I personally don’t feel anything like that in my body, but what I do feel sometimes is butterflies in my stomach, a broken heart or a lump in my throat. These are your chakras trying desperately to get you back into balance.

What Are Chakras?

Ok, so there are many (and I mean MANY) theories on what chakras are, where they came from and what they do. It’s a pretty interesting topic, but for our purposes the complete history isn’t important – a basic understanding is all you need to begin to balance your chakras, which can balance your body, mind and soul.

Remember that everything in our world is made up of atoms, and only 1% of that atom is matter. The other 99% is space that is undiscovered at this time. That means that 99% of what's happening around us is undiscovered to the human eye at this point in our evolution.

What are chakras? The chakras are simply points in your body where energy of a particular frequency gathers. Chakras can become unbalanced if too much or not enough energy is being attracted to this area. This can cause in imbalance in your physical, mental, emotional and spiritual life. That’s it!
The Seven Major Chakras

There are 7 main chakras (or points in your body) that seem to be located from the base of your spine to the top of your head. Each chakra corresponds with a different area in you physical, mental, emotional and spiritual states just because they attract that frequency of energy. Here’s a quick rundown of each chakra, where they’re located and what they attract.

1st Chakra (Root Chakra)
Location: base of Spine
Concerned with: stability, safety, security and your connection with your body
Location: lower belly
Concerned with: emotions, sexuality, sensuality, passion and attraction

3rd Chakra (Solar Plexus Chakra)
Location: mouth of stomach
Concerned with: ambition, motivation, and personal power

4th Chakra (Heart Chakra)
Location: center of chest
Concerned with: unconditional love, compassion, and equilibrium

5th Chakra (Throat Chakra)
Location: Throat

7th Chakra (Crown Chakra)

The Seventh Chakra (Crown Chakra)

Are you there Higher Self? It's me, your lower self!

Being able to access your true purpose, talk to the god of your choice and having a clear head are all signs of a balanced 7th chakra. A chakra is an area where particular frequencies gather. The part of your body that collects the seventh chakra's choice of energy is located immediately above your head, where a crown would sit (hence the nickname - crown chakra.)
What Does the Energy of the 7th Chakra Handle?

Ok, so now you're surviving (1st chakra), you're comfortable with your emotions (2nd chakra), you've accessed your personal power (3rd chakra) you are completely compassionate (4th chakra) you can express yourself freely (5th chakra), and you can now perceive neutrally (6th chakra) a connection to your true purpose can be manifested.

Spiritual Purpose

We all have one! Do you know what it is? With a balanced 7th chakra, your reason for coming to the earth is accessible to you. You know why you're here, and you know how to take advantage of your abilities to fully express, learn and grow into a more evolved being.

Your Higher Self and The Divine

For some people these are two seperate entities. For others, they are the same being. Whatever you believe, a balanced seventh chakra allows you to fully connect with your higher self, God or any higher being that you believe in. This makes the answers to your questions readily available, miracle healing possible and the feeling of unconditional love a constant part of your life.

How Does a Chakra Get Unbalanced?

Remember that a chakra is an area were certain types of frequencies gather. All things in this world have a measurable frequency. That includes material objects as well as unseen things like thoughts and feelings. The 7th chakra attracts and is attracted to frequencies around 480Hz. This means that anything that resonates with that frequency, and that you accept as true, will influence the area of the seventh chakra.

An Overstimulated 7th Chakra

If your seventh chakra is overstimulated you may be overly spiritual and not paying attention to your body. Remember, we are on this earth to learn something and the body is the vehicle we use to get there. While it is important to access your spiritual side, neglecting your bodies needs will make it nearly impossible to get anything accomplished for your spirit. Another way the 7th chakra can be overstimulated is through intelligence. You can over intellectualize everything you come across instead of being neutral.

An Understimulated 7th Chakra

An understimulated seventh chakra may result in confusion, slow thinking, poor cognition or the inability to learn new things. The connection with anything spiritual may not be a priority or even something you believe it. You may be completely in your body and not accept anything that you can't experience with your 5 senses.

Physical Results of an Unbalanced Crown Chakra

Because everything has a frequency and frequencies are influenced by what's around them, if your energy is unbalanced, the results can show up physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually. Here are some issues you may have if your 7th chakra is unbalanced:

Headaches
Anxiety/Worry
Psychic Attack
Mental/Cognitive Issues
Schizophrenia
Immune Disorders

How to Balance Your Seventh Chakra

Balancing your 7th chakra will allow you to have a stronger connection with your Higher Self and the spirit world. Some easy ways to balance your seventh chakra are found below.

Ask Your Personal Advice Columnist

Instead of 'Dear Abby' or other popular advice columns, practice asking yourself when you need guidance. You might think it's silly or not real, but do it anyway. When you're going through a questionable situation, relax your body and mind and simply ask the question to Your Higher Self, God, or any other spiritual being you believe in. You might get an answer right away, it might come to you later as inspiration, or the situation could just reveal itself as you're working through it. The more you practice, the more clear the answers will be.

Devote Time to Your Spirit

We spend so much time honoring our bodies by keeping them clean, dressing them, exercising, eating, etc., but there is a lack of time spent on your spirit. Meditate, honor and spend time listening to your spiritual side. Your body is only half of your entire self. Devote time to the other half of yourself.

Energy Healings

There are many practitioners that specialize in balancing chakras if you're having trouble doing it yourself. Do a search for "energy healers" in your area to find one. If you're in the Madison, WI area, I work through intense energy issues using vibrational energy healing. I can shift the energy of your system and basically give you a clean slate. Click here for more information on chakra balancing and vibrational energy work.

Crystals and Gemstones

Crystals and gemstones each resonate at different frequencies depending on their connection with the earth and where they came from. In general, violet or clear stones are great for balancing the seventh chakra. However, I suggest when you're looking for a stone to work with you, don't go by the books. Feel your way to the perfect stone for you. Set an intention in your mind as to what you want to work on. Then hold or put your hand over the stones you're choosing from one at a time. One of them will stand out to you, and that's the one you should pick. After awhile your energy may shift, and then at this time find another stone that matches what you need. Click here to check out the variety of crystals and gemstones we sell in our boutique.
